This week, NIFTi deployed two UGVs and two UAVs to help the Vigili del Fuoco in assessing damage to cultural heritage in Mirandola, Italy. Mirandola is in the Emilia-Romagna region, which was hit hard earlier this year by several earthquakes. NIFTi deployed after having received a request for aid from Vigilia del Fuoco, the Italian national rescue organization in charge of disaster response and recovery.
A NIFTi team of 7 people, assisted by various members of the Vigili del Fuoco, performed a multitude of missions in the Ch.San Francesco, and the Duomo di Mirandola. Using tracked ground robots (NIFTi UGV) and multicopters (NIFTi UAVs), the team gathered 3D reconstructions ("maps") and high-resolution video material about structural damage to ceilings, arches, and aisles in these (largely destroyed) buildings, and about the state of cultural artifacts such as paintings, decorations, tombs, and altars.
Overall, the team performed eight UAV missions and four UGV missions, for a total mission time of around 3.5 hours.
NIFTi would like to thank the local and Rome-based members of the Vigili del Fuoco for their enormous support and close collaboration during this deployment, and Robin Murphy (CRASAR) and Satoshi Tadokoro (IRS) for sharing experience.
More detailed information will appear soon.
